Oh yah...we rock those masks.
We, as women, have beauty regiments that we perform to take care of ourselves/look younger/etc. We color our hair, we use a barrage of beauty products on our face & neck, we train our waists, we wrap our torsos. We take care of our bodies with exercise, vitamins, healthy eating. We also do these things to stay healthy. Our bodies are temples, or so they say.
I may not be the best at taking care of myself. I know that as my girls get older, I would love to instill healthy habits in them. Why is it good to wash your face? Why should you drink water instead of juice when you're thirsty? Why is it better to exercise in the morning versus at night?
But the best thing I can do for them right now is to learn about their beauty within.
My belly is jiggly and so is my derriere. I don't hide from my girls. They've seen it ALL. And they make comments: ooh, your belly looks like it has jelly in it. And I let them know I'm okay with it.
I could say, "I wish I had a flatter belly." or "I wish my legs were thinner." But I don't! I want them to see any body type as beautiful and I don't want them as young teenagers having the wrong idea about what is beautiful. I love my big bootie and I love my jelly belly because that's who I am. I can change that about myself, but I don't need to shame myself in front of my girls.
Beauty within is loving others; being kind; listening; being grateful. It is ugly to be envious, spiteful, bitter. So when we discuss beauty, we discuss attributes that make you beautiful. When they get older, we can talk more about healthy habits for your physical body. They're not there yet.
Try to see the beauty within you and let others see that beauty too. Inner beauty is so much more attractive than physical beauty. But, uh, hey....it's still cool to get rid of those blackheads, right???
Right???????
