Tombstone....it was amazing. The history behind the town, the fables versus the truth, the tall and handsomes everywhere....I loved every part of it. It was muggy, I was sweaty, we walked everywhere, but we saw everything we wanted to and more. We were back in time with Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and Ed Schieffelen. We saw gunfights, the mine that started it all, the old time press; we laughed over funny stuff we did and said, the girls drank sarsparilla for the first time.
YESTERDAY, in photos:
Steering Wheel Shots from Mesa to Tombstone
We stayed at the historic Larian Motel, in room number 5, Bat Masterson (he was the dandy of the West). It was actually a pretty good motel!
Um, pardon the artwork....
Mom and her "bad boys".
The girls, for as much walking as we had to do, did great and had lot of
fun. They loved the cowboys, the dirt, the horses, the bad guys and the
good guys.
We visited some historic sites (I think Mom & I enjoyed that more than the girls). I LOVE Ghost Adventures and the Birdcage Theater was featured on one of the episodes. It was so cool to be in there, knowing what they saw/heard (even if it was "fake").
We called it a night and relaxed with the rain. The power went out once (I freaked out, thinking that something was going to pop out of the dark at me...hey, we were in a haunted motel, alright). Overall, no ghosties.
TODAY, in pictures:
We started the day off right, cowboy hats and all.
We had breakfast at the Longhorn, then took a ride around town (we couldn't understand half of what our tour guide said....he was quite the mumbler).
The infamous public restrooms.
We visited more historical sites today: old buildings, graveyards...amazing.
Silver vein
Original timbers inside the mine
In town, one of the mines was called the Good Enough Mine and we were able to take a tour of it. It was incredible! Mom and I were a bit nervous with the littles, but they all did a great job.
Majestic views of the Dragoons.
We rounded out our trip by coming home, a surprise visit from Chelsea and Tombstone, the movie. "I'm your huckleberry."
Seriously though, what a great trip. I love anything historical and this was filled with history. What did each cowboy or tour guide say? "We'll tell you how it really was, not like it was in Hollywood."
We didn't make it to the museum in Tucson because we decided to stay and do the mine tour, which I'm extremely glad we did. I would recommend Tombstone to anyone, but remember (and we were told this at the beginning; I thought the cowboy was joking): The only thing that's free in Tombstone are the pictures.
There you have it folks.
THE END.
