I found this gem while sorting through some unorganized pictures today. Yes, that is Piper, at Sea World, sitting in front of the underwater viewing tank of Shamu, watching a tv showing facts about Shamu.
My girls are addicted to tv. And by tv, I mean movies. We don't have tv, so they're not up to date on any television shows that are popular. They've seen some shows from the Disney channel and PBS while at their grandparents, but that's it.
They love to watch movies. In fact, they can quote from some too. They can sing a lot of the "This Is Halloween" song from "Nightmare Before Christmas". They love watching the Muppets and can tell you that Leo Sayers sings "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing".
They're usually watching it when I get up (yes, I get up that late) and sometimes they'll watch one while I take a shower or run errands (don't fret, B works from home).
While some days it's a blessed a relief, others it makes me wish they played more. Getting them to play outside can be like pulling teeth.
So lately, I've been trying REALLY hard to make them play outside for a certain amount of time, keeping certain toys "special" so that they can play with them every once in a while. I have been debating about making a list (my friend Lydia will go wild over this) detailing the special toys that they have so I can keep them in rotation without forgetting about a few of them (my brain shuts off quite often these days).
Movies are fun...in small portions. It's just like eating fun stuff. It's healthier to eat smaller portions. So why not watch movies in smaller portions? Maybe start slowing it down to one every other day, then slowing it down more than that. Of course, that might mean I need to be more vigilant, which (on days like TODAY in particular) might be a challenge.
What do you do with your kids and movies? Do you have special things for them to play with? Do you play with them? And if so, how the heck do you do that without going crazy?
